SAFE ASYLUM: OUR BELIEFS
Safe Asylum is a grass-roots activist group open to all Tasmanian's who wish to see fair treatment for people seeking asylum in Australia, in particular those who arrive in Australia by boat.
We believe that the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia, as a party to both the United Nations Convention relating to the Status of Refugees (1951) and its 1967 Protocol, should take no action which breaches the responsibilities Australia entered into in these acts.
To this end we call on the Australian Government to end off-shore processing of claims for asylum (article 32) and the mandatory detention of people seeking asylum (article 31).
We believe that people seeking asylum should have their application for refugee status evaluated fairly and expeditiously, and that, whilst this process occurs, they should be granted freedom of movement in the Australian community (Article 26), the right to work (Articles 17 to 19), the right to public relief and assistance (Article 23) and the rights to housing and education (Articles 21 and 22).
We believe that Australia is enriched by multiculturalism, and that Australians are a fair-minded people, willing to shoulder our responsibilities in dealing with the problems facing millions of people seeking asylum and refugees around the globe.
We believe that the lyrics of our national anthem are more than just hollow words, they are a genuine expression of our national generosity of spirit, and we demand our government comply with its responsibilities under the 1951 Convention to give them life:
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share.
